High Definition Multimedia Interface Cables
( HDMI Cables ) : Frequently Asked Questions
|
|
1) Are all HDMI Cables the Same?
|
|
We have tested HDMI cables from several manufacturers and there are many
factors that influence the quality and price of an HDMI cable . HDMI cables are
made up of several parts - The HDMI connector, the internal cables, the insulation, and the
packaging.
|
|
The HDMI cable connector is the jack that
is inserted into the HDMI compliant device. More expensive cables include 24K
gold plated connectors, less expensive ones will use nickel plating. The
gold plating is used for better electrical conductivity.
|
|
The HDMI cable connector is
embedded in a case that connects to a length of cable and protects the
connections from damage. This casing can be made of less expensive plastic
materials like PVC (which tends to be fairly rigid) or non PVC materials. The
HDMI cable connector should be strong enough to firmly hold the HDMI cable to
the 19 pin connections within the case. Simply plugging the HDMI cable into a
TV can cause a fair amount of stress where the HDMI Cable meets the HDMI connector. A poorly manufactured cable will be more likely to fail because the
connector allows the cable to pull from the internal jacks causing either poor
contact or no contact. Another factor that greatly effects the cost of the cable
is the gauge of the wire and the insulation on the wire. The thicker HDMI cables
use 22 or 24 gauge wires within the insulation. These are heavier and
as a result use more material (usually copper) and are more expensive. Do not confuse quality with
heavier gauge hdmi cables. An HDMI cable running less than 15 feet does not require a
22 or 24 gauge cable to operate properly.
|
|
Another factor that will affect the HDMI cable cost is the packaging. A
cable sold at retail stores is usually packaged
in an impervious plastic package to prevent theft and improve product
presentation. It also allows retailers to hang the cables on a rack. This packaging can add between
$2 and $7 to the cost of the cable. Our cables come packaged in what is known as
polybag packaging. This packaging protects the cable allows a lot of cables to be shipped
and stored in a relatively small space. This results in lower warehouse costs
and lower shipping costs (to us from our manufacturer and to you the consumer).
|
|
2) Do these cables work with all HDMI devices.
|
|
The cables sold here work with the HDMI 1.2 specification. Any device that uses the HDMI
1.2 specification will work with these cables. This
includes Blue Ray dvd players, standard dvd players, dvd burners, Sony PS3's, cable TV boxes, DVR's
(digital video recorders), Satellite TV boxes, Plasma TV's, LCD TV's and
Projection TV's These are male to male cables. The device usually has a female
socket type connection that accepts the male connector.
|
|
3) Do these cables support 1080p, 720i or 480p?
|
|
Yes. These HDMI cables support the HDMI 1.2 specification and support all of the
above.
|
|
4) Is an HDMI Cable connection better than a
Component Video connection?
|
|
We believe an HDMI connection is superior to component connections for the
following reasons. HDMI cables deliver uncompressed all digital audio and
video signals over a single cable. A single HDMI cable can be used instead of
five cables (the 3 video and 2 audio normally used when connecting a device to a
TV via component connections). This is a huge advantage when hanging a plasma TV on a wall 8 or 9 feet
from the video equipment. We also asked John Chance, a professional Home
theater installer ( www.THTconnection.com
) for his opinion on the benefits of using HDMI cables: "HDMI
is loss less, in that is there is no compression. Component is an analog
connection therefore it has to be compressed and converted (Digital to analog,
then Analog to Digital), which causes signal loss. The bottom line is HDMI
delivers a superior picture than that of a Component Video connection. It
delivers exactly what it receives at a higher bit rate with more colors."
|
|
5) What is the difference between the 3 foot cable
that costs $100 in the store I bought my tv from and your cable? We have sold
HDMI cables for about one year and as of this writing we have not had a single
HDMI cable returned. We believe the $100 cables sold in those stores are very
high in quality and very high (too high perhaps) in price.
Hopefully this information was helpful to you
and you consider using us as your cable supplier.
